SRINAGAR: On Thursday, students from a girls’ school in Srinagar took part in a protest. They claimed that the principal had instructed them not to wear “abayas” (traditional cloaks) when entering the school premises. This incident brought back memories of a similar hijab controversy that occurred in Karnataka last year.

The principal of Vishwa Bharti Higher Secondary School defended her actions, stating that she aimed to discourage the use of “colourful abayas” and emphasized the importance of adhering to a proper dress code. She insisted that no higher authorities were involved in the decision. However, one of the protesting students claimed that the principal had changed her stance after initially instructing them to completely stop wearing abayas.

Former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti criticized the J&K administration, which is under the control of the central government, accusing them of imposing their will and interfering with religious obligations. She strongly condemned the objection to abayas in schools.
